19 Informative Books About Nutrition

Learn the foundations of the latest trends in nutrition.

Nutrition is a core aspect of life that is sadly being largely neglected and has been so for quite a long time now. For the better part of the last century, people have been blindly consuming whatever is being currently pushed by companies that tend to have profit as goal rather than the health of the consumer.

“You are what you eat” goes the saying, and is more than just a simple pseudo-deep phrase. What you consume deeply affects your body in the long run. A constant intake of nutritious whole food will have an enormously different effect than a constant intake of chemicals and hormone-laden artificial “food”, your choice. If getting to the bottom of the nutrition subject is what you look for, these books are here to point you the right way.

#13 The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven R Gundry M.D. (Author

The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven R Gundry M.D. (Author
This book is a must read for people interested in food and culinary medicine. It is beautifully written by Dr Stephen Gundry and essentially presents a paradigm shift in best practices in eating plants. For too long, we have been focusing on vegetarianism versus veganism along with a slew of other fad diets. Yet as many vegetarians and vegans know, it is possible to eat plants and be overweight and unhealthy. Herein lies the plant paradox.

The Plant Paradox asks a better question – is there an optimal way to eat plants? Dr Gundry introduces us to lectin which is found in gluten, seeds, nuts and leaves. Lectin is part of the self-defence mechanism of plants which is designed to protect plants for predators. When we ingest lectin, it sets off a cascade of biochemical reactions in our bodies which essentially makes us sick and promotes weight gain.

The book gives us very practical ways to avoid lectins in our diets while still allowing us to benefit from fruits and vegetables. Peeling fruits and vegetables, removing seeds from peppers and tomatoes and eating white rice thatcher than brown rice are among the practical, inexpensive tips in the book. I have gifted this book to friends and colleagues and recommend it to my patients because it works.
