Stress Relief Tips for Seniors

If you are a senior, you may feel like you are undergoing an undue amount of stress. As bad as stress is for you, it is very important that you find ways out of these situations. Here are a few clever ways you can remove the stress and lead a much healthier and happier life.

Develop a Hobby

Retirement can be a lot more stressful than you have anticipated. When you were working, your days were more structured and you generally had something to do every day between your work life and your personal life. However, after you retire, the structure of the workday gives way to an informal day of doing whatever you want. However, if you have nothing with which to fill those days, then you end up having a lot of sitting around time. If you have a hobby that helps to fill the empty hours, you may be a lot happier and a lot less stressed than those who do not.

Limit Monthly Expenses

Just because you’re retired doesn’t mean the bills have eased away as well. Your monthly expenses while only collecting a pension or social security can add to the existing stress. However, there may be some bills that you can do away with entirely. If you’re at retirement age, your children are all grown and you may not need the life insurance policy that you’re still holding. If you sell your policy to a life settlement firm, you can easily get rid of costly premiums and keep that money in your pocket where it belongs.

Make Time for Friends

Don’t forget to make time for your friends and enjoying their companionship. Some seniors make the mistake of holing themselves up in their house which can lead to a very lonely existence. Since you have more free time, you will be able to do such things as spend time at the park, visit museums, or any number of local activities where you can visit with friends or even make new ones. Sharing interests with others can be a stress reliever and many people think it makes life even more worth living.

Travel

With all of the free time you now have on your hands, why not go out and see the world? You can visit all of the places you have always dreamed of while learning more about the world in which you live. Before purchasing any tickets or hotel/resort stays, check to see if they have a senior discount. While not all will, many may off discounts to those of a certain age and it certainly cannot hurt to try.

Sell Your House

Many seniors choose to sell their home, especially if they are left with no partner or spouse, simply because they don’t feel like, or cannot, keeping up the house. Constant cleaning or occasional repairs may feel overwhelming. In its place, they choose to move to a retirement community where all of those things are done for them and they are surrounded by people of a like mind
