#1 My Stroke of Insight

This book is a dramatic page-turner mixed with lessons in brain science. The neuroscientist author tells the story of experiencing a severe stroke and her journey of recovery from it. She shares many observations about the mysteries, structure, and plasticity of the brain. It is both fascinating and educational.

#2 Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

This amazing book which will challenge your notions of the world, human beings, evolution, society, money, religion, liberalism, and happiness, just to name a few things. It definitely lives up to the hype and I highly recommend it: as do Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, and many, many others.

#3 The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

A must-read book that will make you smarter is The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell, a writer for The New Yorker. This book is a study of trends and how one small change, regardless of how minuscule, can completely disrupt the current course of something.

Gladwell discusses how one simple shift in behavior can completely change the social environment. Reading Gladwell's insight on trends and what causes their tipping points allows people to better understand not just common business trends, but ideas and social structure as a whole. Once we understand the process of a tipping point, we will be better equipped to use it to our advantage and have more control over our environment.

This book is so enlightening because it makes you recognize the tipping points of ideas and trends before they spread like wildfire. After reading this, you have a completely new way of looking at the world and you are smarter for it. I think it gets you out of your bubble and makes you realize that you, and anyone else for that matter, can be the cause of an idea's or a trend's tipping point. This book makes you think, and I think any book that gives you a platform for new thoughts is a book worth reading that will expand your intelligence.

An excerpt from Gladwell's novel is as follows:

We are actually powerfully influenced by our surroundings, our immediate context, and the personalities of those around us. Merely by manipulating the size of a group, we can dramatically improve its receptivity to new ideas. By tinkering with the presentation of information, we can significantly improve its stickiness. Simply by finding and reaching those few people who hold so much social power, we can shape the course of social epidemics. In the end, Tipping Points are a reaffirmation of the potential for change and the power of intelligent action.

#4 Virtual Culture: The Way We Work Doesn’t Work Anymore

This book champions the benefits of remote working, which will save your company tons of money and create an atmosphere of trust between you and your employees. Productivity comes from people completing their tasks in a timely, professional, adult manner, not from mandatory daily attendance in a sea of cubicles and offices.

When you recognize and respect your employees' time inside and outside work hours, giving them the freedom to work from home, you will retain amazing talent and create a result-oriented virtual culture as a forward-thinking employer that embraces the future of work. This book is changing the way companies are doing business.

#5 The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

When it comes to books, it’s not just intense non-fiction that can increase your intellect. All genres including literary dramas, sci-fi, and even humour can do just as good a job of expanding your mental horizons, and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is the perfect example how.

On the face of it H2G2 might seem like a silly sci-fi romp, but beneath the silliness, there is a scathing satire delivered in a barrage of jokes and wordplay. Douglas Adams’ prose provides witty insight and a sideways look upon interpersonal relationships, bureaucracy and even the meaning of life itself. It’s one of the few books that can change your way of thinking while keeping you in constant fits of laughter. That’s why this book still maintains a dedicated and passionate fan base.

#6 Owning Tomorrow: The Unstoppable Force of Disruptive Leadership

Owning Tomorrow: The Unstoppable Force of Disruptive Leadership highlights many real-life examples, exercises, tools, and techniques to help senior executives and leaders with ambitions to develop themselves and their organizations beyond what they thought was possible.

Many existing best practices in business such as good decision-making, maintaining healthy cash flow, and building a values-driven organization are the same for disruptive companies as they are for any well-functioning enterprise. If those are missing, no company—disruptive or otherwise—can last very long. This is not just a book for the upper echelons of management. Anyone interested in creating a future that feels more successful and fulfilled will find ideas and tips for the journey.

#7 Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain

The reason this book is so special is that it effectively illustrates that we don’t have to be limited by the mind we are born with. Sharon Begley elegantly and lucidly explains scientific studies of psychology and neuroplasticity to show that we are capable of rewiring our brain for increased capabilities.

Unlike many other similar books, Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain makes the concepts of brain training clear and accessible. The Wall Street Journal science writer beautifully takes complex theories regarding the development of cognition and behavior and turns them into palpable lessons for everyday life. Because consciousness is the defining characteristic of human beings, this book is a must-read if you’re interested in becoming the best you possible.
