Robotization As A Lifestyle

The word “robot” was used for the first time in 1920 when the first science fiction theatre play premiered. Then, it was still a futuristic concept. Now, it is our reality even though not all of us realize it to the full extent. Most people associate robots with humanoid characters from Hollywood movies.

But they are much simpler than that and for sure don’t look so dramatic. We refer to any automated device as a robot. For example, such common devices as an automatic vacuum cleaner are robots. We widely use kitchen robots, robots that clean windows, swimming pools, cut lawns, etc. An automatic monitor stand can also be referred to as a robot, even though its functionality is pretty simple.

As you can see, robots are used in all walks of our lives. So, let’s have a closer look at where exactly they are applied and how they may evolve to improve the way we live and work.

Robots for Domestic Use

At home, we use plenty of more or less advanced robots. They assist us in cleaning our homes and yards, cooking, moving heavy objects, and similar. The majority of them rely on artificial intelligence technology to evolve and improve their skills. But some don’t. The latter ones are simpler devices such as automated lifts, supports, stands, etc.

Robots in Industry

In industry, robots facilitate the work of people. They perform monotonous tasks that don’t require a lot of skills but are demanding because a high concentration level is needed constantly.

Robots also replace people in dangerous environments or locations where conditions are not the most favorable to work (too low or too high temperatures, low oxygen concentration, and similar). For example, it involves cleaning nuclear wastes, disarming bombs, installing and repairing pipes that contain toxic gases, even cleaning and repairing sewage systems.

Robot called Curiousity that was sent by NASA to explore Mars is one of the most prominent examples of how robots can work in environments where humans cannot.

Robots in Medicine

Robots take a special niche in medicine. They offer great assistance in treating patients by providing 3D view and 10+ enlargement of a surgical area. Robots enable performing surgeries not accessible earlier by providing doctors with tools that are much superior to the mobility of a human hand. By enhancing accuracy, robots help to prevent errors and eliminate the intrusive effect during traditional surgeries.

Prosthetics has experienced a giant push with robotics development. Robots can replace damaged parts of the human body, such as an arm or a leg. It is another important development in robotics technology.

Recently, micro- and nano-robots were introduced. With it, medicine has made another step forward. Such robots deliver medicines to the pathological parts of the body without affecting other organs and reduce the side effects caused by administrative drugs.

Robots in Security Systems and Defence

In these fields, robots have been used since they were developed. Smart machines are applied to monitor large areas and notify in case something abnormal is detected. These applications are perfect to protect your home. They have also been used in the military, too.

In the military, robots are used to disarm bombs, monitor the skies, ground and water, to observe enemy’s activities, and sending information in the real-time mode.

Robots Companions

Advanced robots can do more than just performing daily duties at home or pre-programmed actions like in the case of medical applications. Nowadays, robots are developed who can serve as efficient companions.

With the help of artificial intelligence, robots can learn about your habits, likes, and dislikes, and be like your friends. They can even have emotions configured with the help of artificial intelligence.

Such robots can perform not only the role of a companion or a friend. They can monitor people’s vital signs and thus, be great assistants in taking care of aged people or those who suffer from life-threatening conditions. Such robots will notify caregivers or medical personnel immediately when help is needed.

Robotic companions are great in taking care of people who suffer from anxiety or communication disorders. Such robots can be customized to exhibit a specific range of emotions and thus, make such people feel easier.

Bottom Line

Robots are not only some creatures from science fiction. They are applied everywhere: in our homes, in all types of industries, in medicine, and they can even act as our companions. Without them, our lives wouldn’t be the same anymore. Robots are here to stay and it is up to us how this technology is going to develop.
