How to Clean an Interior Concrete Floor?

Concrete is one of the most popular materials in the construction industry. It’s strong, durable, and easy to maintain. However, the appearance of concrete isn’t to everyone’s taste, and some despise its brutalist aesthetic. Concrete can complement minimalist interiors and add a different dynamic to modern spaces. Nowadays, concrete is used for kitchen splashbacks, counters, and interior floors.

Concrete is low-maintenance and, when properly sealed, it’s non-porous and stain-resistant. The only downside is that’s it’s incredibly hard and very uncomfortable to fall on. It might not be the best material for families with young children running on the floor.

There are a few things you can do to make your concrete floor even easier to clean.

The right floor paints

If you don’t like the natural grey appearance, you can paint your concrete floor in a different colour. Just make sure to use the right floor paint to protect the surface and make the cleaning process easier. If you want a painted concrete floor for your garage or driveway, you need to use hardwearing paint. Heavy objects can chip the paint and damage the concrete over time.

Routine maintenance

As with most materials, you need to do your routine maintenance checks. Dust the floor regularly with a hoover or microfibre dusting cloths. Avoid purchasing disposable wipes that generate huge amounts of waste and are expensive to buy time and time again.

Try to find cleaning products that are specifically designed for concrete. Most of the specialist products will clean your floor and leave a protective film on it. If you have a waxed concrete floor, you may need to top up the wax to keep it looking brand new. Just make sure to research what type of wax you need and how to apply it. You don’t want to mess up your beautiful concrete flooring.

Concrete flooring needs a little polishing and maintenance to look stylish inside the home. Once a year, you should use a buffing machine to restore the shine of your concrete flooring. You could use an electric single-brush machine for large areas, like in your garage or office. Without his maintenance, your concrete floor can look unfinished and harsh against your interiors.

Things to avoid

Never scrape your floor with an abrasive brush, like steel wool, powder or wire. Scraping will damage the protective layer on the floor and damage the surface. Acidic products, like ammonia, acetone, soda and bleach, should also be avoided. Remember, concrete likes cleaning products with a neutral PH.

Do not pour excessive amounts of water over the concrete. Use a wrung-out mop or cloth to clean instead of drowning the surface in soapy water. Finally, don’t drag your furniture across the floor and place a floor mat under any wheels to avoid scratches.

Concrete is a fantastic material – if you know how to work with it.
