This is the story of NY Times v. Sullivan, a landmark First Amendment case. The case set some national standards for the law of defamation. It was a Warren Court decision in the early 1960s. Lewis writes is an elegant but simple style that recreates the history of the event. His writing identifies the important actors and participants surrounding the case. Lewis is a writer for the legal scholar or the person just wanting a good story.
