India is so cheap you can practically live there for a year without earning a salary.

OK, this may not be literally true, and you need a visa: but it was true for me, as I was given free accommodation and meals by the Indian Institute of Technology–Bombay. If, heaven forbid, I were ever about to become homeless, I would spend my last dollars buying a plane ticket to India, because U.S. dollars go so far there.  And the weather in Mumbai while I was there (except for a monsoon that killed 1,000 people) was near-perfect.
