I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (1/8)

It’s a true crime story about a rapist who graduates to killing and leaves a trail of victims throughout California. McNamara’s recounting of the crime puts terror in the heart of the reader, the same terror the victims must have felt. It’s impossible to put down the book — but first you’ll get up yet one more time to make sure the porch door is locked. Only a gifted writer can move that level of fear into a reader’s home. Probably the best true crime book ever written.
