McNamara’s recounting of the crime puts terror in the heart of the reader, the same terror the victims must have felt. It’s impossible to put down the book — but first you’ll get up yet one more time to make sure the porch door is locked. Only a gifted writer can move that level of fear into a reader’s home. Probably the best true crime book ever written.
