The Best DIY Ideas for Storage Containers

It’s safe to say that all of us probably have at least a few old storage containers lying around. And while it can be easier to toss them out, it might be better to consider getting a little more creative. Check out our guide on the best DIY ideas for storage containers so that you can get the most out of them!

Gallon Drum Beehive

One of the best DIY ideas for storage containers is giving an industrial gallon drum a new life as a beehive. This project requires a little more elbow grease, but if you’re looking to get into this awesome hobby, creating your own hive from scratch is an excellent place to start. You’ll want to start by cutting the drum in half long-ways. From there, you’ll use tools to assemble the rest of the structure from lumber, tin sheets, screws, and beeswax. Once you finish, you can start gathering bees to live in your new hand-crafted hive.

Floating Suitcase Shelves

This next project is one of our personal favorites. Not only are they practical, but they also add a stylish, deliciously kitsch splash to any room you use them in. Floating suitcase bookshelves are super easy to put together. All you need are a few refurbished suitcases or briefcases and some mounting hardware. We recommend using older bags for this project, as more modern versions won’t have the same appeal as their vintage predecessors. But, once you find some excellent suitcases, all that’s left to do is polish them with a bit of leather cleaner and mount them to your wall.

Vintage Coke Crate Spice Rack

Another simple and excellent idea for upcycling storage containers is taking those old Coke crates and turning them into racks for your spices and herbs. This project is ideal for those who have vintage crates lying around; although, if you’re working with modern or newer crates, those will work just as well.

You can paint your crates whichever color you’d like, but we recommend going with a shade that coordinates well with your kitchen’s color palette. Once your container’s appearance is to your liking, you can mount it on your wall, saving counter space and organizing your favorite seasonings. We suggest putting your spices in glass jars that fit snuggly into the Coke crate cubbies for the ultimate finishing touch.

More than likely, you have a surplus of old containers, and you’re probably not quite ready to part them. If that’s the case, we hope you’ll consider some of these DIY projects when you’re trying to figure out how to upcycle your favorite storage options.
