The Wheel Deal: Top Celebrity Car Collections

You probably collect something—coins, sports memorabilia, “Game of Thrones” action figures… something. Well, if it feels like you’re running out of space for it, imagine how hard it must be to store the growing stash of rare automobiles you’ve bought for millions of dollars. Here’s a sampling of the top celebrity car collections.

Jay Leno

He’s a natural for a celebrity episode of “Hoarders,” except the former talk show host has an enormous, tidy garage for his collection of about 150 drool-worthy supercars. Altogether, they’re worth about $50 million, but if he had to choose just one to save in a fire, Leno has said that his favorite is a 1994 McLaren F1; he bought it for $800,000 and it’s now worth $12 million. Here are a few more of his cars that are OK, we guess:

  • 1912 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer
  • 1956 Jaguar XKSS
  • 1930 Bentley 27-Liter
  • 2018 Koenigsegg Regera
  • 1969 Lamborghini Miura S

Ralph Lauren

While you were buying Polo shirts, you were enabling the famed designer to assemble a car collection worth more than $350 million. The son of immigrants and originally named Ralph Lifshitz, he’s adjusted well to being rich. He has a particular weakness for Ferraris (a 1962 250 GTO, a 1958 Testa Rossa Spyder, a 375 plus—you get the idea), but has also made room for these luxury vehicles:

  • 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK “Count Trossi”
  • 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder
  • 1955 Jaguar XKD
  • 2007 Lamborghini Reventón
  • 1937 Fiat Topolino

Elton John

If anything can out-dazzle the rocket man, it might be his car collection. He loves collecting British-made automobiles, but he’s not greedy. In 2001, he put 10 of his cars up for auction because he wanted other people to enjoy them, too. He let go of two vintage Rolls Royces—maybe the upkeep on them was too much of a hassle?—and has also owned:

  • 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550
  • 1955 Bentley S1 Continental Fastback
  • 2003 Maserati Quattroporte
  • 1972 Ferrari Daytona 365GTB/4
  • 1965 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Roadster

James Hetfield

Heavy metal, indeed. One of the top celebrity car collections belongs to the frontman of Metallica, and when he says he wants other people to enjoy his cars, he means it. Last year, he showcased nine of his favorite vintage cars in the museum exhibit “Reclaimed Rust.” He also donated 10 rebuilt, customized exotic cars to Los Angeles’ Petersen Museum permanently, including:

  • 1937 Lincoln Zephyr
  • 1953 Buick Skylark
  • 1934 Packard
  • 1948 Jaguar
  • 1963 Lincoln Continental
