6 Unhealthy Habits That Hurt Your Skin

Your skin is the biggest organ of your body. Taking care of it is vital to a healthy lifestyle. Though you want to treat your skin right, so it looks great and healthy, chances are you’ve developed some habits that hurt your skin. From drinking to not using enough sunscreen, check out the habits below and see if you can update your skincare game. Keep your complexion in check!

You Smoke

There are tons of reasons to quit smoking, and it’s almost as bad to your skin as it is to your lungs. Nicotine reduces the blood flow to your skin, meaning all of your skin doesn’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to bounce back. When you smoke, your skin is thinner, duller, and more wrinkled. Even if you switch the unhealthy habits below to healthy habits but continue smoking, your skin still won’t look as good as it could.

You Don’t Wash Your Face Morning and Night

If you want a healthy and fresh face, then you need to wash your face both in the morning and at night. Overnight, your skin sheds dead skin, and your sheets will leave said grime on your face. Throughout the day, your face is again in contact with tons of dirt. Washing your face is the only way to rid that dirt and grime.

You Drink

Alcohol has an effect on various parts of your body—your skin in particular. There are short- and long-term effects; from drier skin to more acne, you must be careful if you drink regularly. Even one night of drinking will take a toll on your skin. Do what you can to reduce your alcohol intake or cut it altogether if you really want fresh skin.

You Don’t Apply Sunscreen Regularly

Even if you think you don’t need it, some form of SPF on your skin is always a good idea. Even though sunshine feels good on your skin, those UV rays are quite damaging—even in the winter. Look for a minimum of SPF 30 in your daily lotion, and maybe even more in your facial moisturizer. Reapply about every two hours if you can if you’re going to be outside.

You Pick at Skin Blemishes

This is another bad habit that a lot of people have. Although it may make you feel better in the short term, picking, popping, squeezing, and scratching at skin blemishes can cause infections and even a bit of scarring. Let the blemishes run their course—it’ll be much better for your skin in the long-run.

You Don’t Moisturize

That dry skin that we were talking about? If you don’t moisturize, that’s going to come back with a vengeance. It’s easy to skip that step when you’re in a rush, but drying out will leave your skin quite dull. Anytime your skin feels like it’s struggling to stretch, then it’s probably been too long since you moisturized.
