3 Ways to Start an Acting Career

Deciding to pursue a career in acting is equal parts exciting and intimidating. From classes to auditions, it’s hard to know where to begin your journey. Everyone’s career is different, and there’s no one right way to kick it off. However, the most important thing is to just jump into it—here are some ways to start an acting career.

Get Some Experience

Like with any skill, practice makes perfect. The best thing you can do when you’re starting out is to pursue every acting opportunity available to you. If you’re in high school or college, take theater classes or join a drama club. Even outside of school, there are likely to be adult classes in your area that you can join. You can also audition at your local theater company or playhouse. Whenever you put time into acting—no matter how small or amateur it is—you’re gaining experience and building a resume.

Find Your Niche

There are several different routes to pursue in the acting world. Figure out what you want to do and where you want to go. Do you prefer comedies to dramas, or screen acting to being on stage? Find the kind of format and genre you enjoy and hone your skills and knowledge on that. While you want to be well-rounded, having a specialty can help you focus on where you want to go as an actor.

Put Yourself Out There

One of the best ways to start an acting career is to just put yourself out there—and to do so with ample confidence. Keep an eye out for local auditions and pursue opportunities whenever you can. Make sure you have quality home recording equipment so you can make audition tapes. Don’t be afraid to market yourself or do some networking, either. It takes courage to try out for a part, but the more you do it, the easier it’ll be—and the better chance you have of landing the role.
