it’s sometimes difficult to judge the impact a game had, and the sheer number of copies released after Knight Lore certainly softened its impact. Nevertheless, its accomplishment cannot be overstated. In this game, the player controls the heroic Sabreman from Sabre Wulf and Underwurlde, who explores a beautiful, 3D-like world in search of the six items required to create a cure for his troublesome lycanthropy. Knight Lore’s programmers, the Stamper brothers, succeeded in simplifying the complicated controls that had bothered the genre and in doing so created not just a classic, but a style of play that defined the ZX Spectrum.

Ultimate Play The Game: Ultimate built its mark with 2D classics like Sabre Wulf, Tranz Am, and this excellent shooter. Despite being constrained to just one screen, Jet Pac’s slick and entertaining gameplay put it well beyond its predecessors. The goal was simple: bits of Jet Man’s rocket fell from the sky and had to be picked up and deposited in a precise order. Once completed, our brave astronaut had to refuel his craft before shooting out… to the same screen and another swarm of dangerous aliens. A true classic, still playable 34 years later and crammed into just 16k of memory.

Incredibly realistic Dizzy franchise. You were an egg that liked to hop around and touch virtually anything. This was a world where you had to transport objects over a dangerous landscape to solve puzzles and where your inventory was limited. It was worse than the Industrial Revolution for children. At least it wasn’t fun. But Dizzy was entertaining. If you try it twenty years later, it will probably kill you.

The best Zx spectrum game loves people like, Skool Daze feels like a game developer trying to make youngsters love school. But many years before Bully, this game gave players the superb freedom to misbehave at faculty for points. Your “hero” could deface college crests, punch out different college students, throw things at instructors, and get other students in a problem for it. Your long-term purpose changed into to extract your file card from the college safe, however, it changed into possible to earn infinite points simply by messing around. Which is precisely what you probably did.

Elite is one of the first and greatest space shooting games, with wire-frame 3D visuals, a stunning cockpit view, and crosshairs that would go on to inspire titles like Rogue Squadron and Lylat Wars. Players take control of Commander Jameson as he travels across space, trading galactic wealth for the galaxy’s largest ship. It’s like a space-age Too Fast Too Furious! in many aspects! The world (or, in this case, the universe) is your oyster, just like Number 2 on our list. Outside of the game’s fundamental core, you can do as little or as much as you desire. This is yet another Spectrum title that was a commercial success and is now available on almost every system imaginable.

My first computer (which I still have) was a ZX Spectrum (yeah, I’m that old) and this was the first game that I ever played on it. It isn’t exactly fast or good-looking by today’s standards, but there’s still something magical about listening to a cassette game load on an old Spectrum…
