Everyone has heard that walking is a healthy activity that can boost your life quality. It really is true—taking a walk can help your muscles and body stay healthy and can even improve your mental health. But, if you just go outside and try to walk around, you will soon find yourself unprepared. The trick to finding success is to know what to take with you on a walk.
A Snack and Water
Possibly the most important thing to bring is water. Dehydration is a major problem and can lead to some serious issues. Even if you do not feel it, your body might be suffering from dehydration during the walk. Bring a large water bottle with you and drink whenever you feel thirsty. Grabbing a small snack such as a granola bar can help you keep up your energy as well.
A Cane
A walking cane is a great accessory to bring with you on a walk. It provides obvious support to walking if you use it properly. It can also help stylize your outfit, adding another layer to your look. If you ever get tired, the cane can help you stay upright and moving forward until you can reach a good place to rest. Not only that, but the cane also has a variety of other uses, such as a tool to push branches out of the way or as a defensive tool.
An Additional Layer
Most of the time, your walks will take place outside, where you are exposed to the elements and nature. This isn’t a major problem, but it is something you should be ready for. Our best suggestion is to bring an additional layer of clothing that you can throw on if you get cold. This might be a sweatshirt, a jacket, or a scarf—anything that can cover you and provide warmth.
A Phone
Bringing your cellphone is a good idea whenever possible. If your phone has internet service, you can use it as a map or a means to listen to something as you walk. In case of an emergency, you can even use the phone to call for help or get a ride. A phone is a great backup to solve so many problems that may arise on a walk; there are very few reasons not to bring it.
Now that you know the bare minimum of what to take with you on a walk, you should find more success on your walks. Mind you, the items you should bring might change depending on the length of your walk. A longer walk might call for more water or snacks, for example. However, for shorter walks in the neighborhood, these items should be enough.
