The Power of Decision

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

The quote dates back to 1935 when the then Secretary of Labor was not served by the host of an event at which she was invited to speak at University of California, Berkeley. The host felt the invited speaker should not have been a politician.  When asked by the press if Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor of the United States had been snubbed, the reply made waves far and wide.

“A snub,” the first lady patiently explained, “is the effort of a person who feels superior to make someone else feel inferior. To do so, he has to find someone who can be made to feel inferior.” The Secretary of Labor is simply not a “snubable” position.

In 1940 the short version of the quote was published and widely distributed in the Reader’s Digest. The quote was oft repeated in the war years when the unity of the country was of paramount importance.

There’s truth here. Unless some part of you agrees, you cannot be made to feel bad because of what others think of you. Whatever they think they see actually says more about themselves than you!

A Course In Miracles Lesson 152 explains the concept this way:  “You may believe that this position is extreme, and too inclusive to be true. Yet can truth have exceptions? If you have the gift of everything, can loss be real? Can pain be part of peace, or grief of joy? Can fear and sickness enter in a mind where love and perfect holiness abide? Truth must be all-inclusive, if it be the truth at all. Accept no opposites and no exceptions, for to do so is to contradict the truth entirely. Salvation is the recognition that the truth is true, and nothing else is true.”

Meditate on the following in silence and take back your rightful inheritance:

The power of decision is my own. This day I will accept myself as what my Father’s Will created me to be. (Lesson 152, ACIM)

Truth is also perfect, whole, and beautiful, as philosophers are fond of stating. Nothing in nature contains chaos, it all fits together perfectly.

The power of decision is to embrace eternal truth or not. In patience, let peace indwell your heart, mind, thoughts and actions this day. This is the day that was made for you to take the power of decision to make your life great, just as heaven and nature will for you.
