The Caribbean island of St Thomas is actually part of the US Virgin Islands after being purchased from Denmark back in 1917 at a cost of $25 million (in gold not cash). Ever since then it has become a popular tourist destination for both Americans and for people coming from farther afield. The best time to visit is between the months of December to May as these are outside of the hurricane season.
From beautiful natural scenery and important historical spots, to fancy restaurants and luxury shops, St Thomas really does have it all, which is why it is so popular with so many tourists. Some of the best things to do when vacationing on the island include the following things:
Go Shopping
The best part about shopping on the island of St Thomas is that any purchases you make are duty free, perfect for you bargain hunters. When arriving onto the island from a cruise ship, visitors will find themselves right in front of the Haven Sight Mall which is home to a wide variety of retailers, including some jewelry stores. However, for the best jewelry on the island, visit jewelers st thomas.
Eat Out
Thanks to the unique history of the island, there are a wide variety of cuisine types to try when eating out in St Thomas. One of the best restaurants on the island is called Blue Orchid and serves traditional seafood dishes from a beautiful location on top of a large volcanic mountain peak. Other restaurants that are worth a visit include the Oceana Restaurant and Bistro and Greengos Caribbean Cantina. When visiting these establishments, be sure to wash your meal down with a local drink called sea moss.
Go To The Beach
Magens Bay Beach is based on the north side of the island and is the most visited beach on St Thomas. The beautiful white sand is perfectly protected by large hills either side meaning that the water there is particularly calm and so perfect for swimming in or paddleboarding on. Whilst there is a small entrance fee to use the beach (this goes towards its upkeep), do not let this put you off making a visit. It is best to get there either early on in the morning or later on in the afternoon as it can get very busy during peak times, especially when the cruise ships are visiting.
Go Sightseeing
If you are a history fan, then you will enjoy paying a visit to the world amber museum which is located in the Hotel 1829. It features an eye catching entrance of a large waterfall made from more than 12,000 individual pieces of amber in a variety of different hues. In addition to numerous artifacts made from green Caribbean ambers, the museum also features valuable antiques and objects from St Petersburg. To further your history fix, Blackbeard’s Castle is also well worth a visit and is spread across a nine acre complex.
