#2 Declutter your home

Remove all the stuff which don't contribute to the overall look of your home or have no practical purpose. Follow the simple rule - if you have not used something for the last six months, consider throwing it away? The exception is seasonal clothing and items. Donate your unworn clothes.

#3 Regular Dusting and Vacuuming

Regular dusting is essential for keeping your house in a pristine condition. Always vacuum afterwards in order to remove any dust settled on the floor. Your carpet may seem clean, but have you ever wondered how things would look like through a magnifying lens? Your wall-to-wall carpeting is a dust-collector that launches dust particles in the air when you simple walking on it. And this is why aregular vacuuming and washing is a must.

#4 Refresh your Bedding

The bed sheets gather a serious collection of dust, skin cells, sweat, body oils and even urine. And, wherever human skin cells are present, there are dust mites to eat them. They are a very serious allergen. To prevent this from happening, wash all bedding and mattress covers in hot water to kill any dust mites. You can add ½ cup of vinegar to your wash to remove any odors and soften your sheets.

To deep clean your mattress using baking soda, sprinkle some over the mattress. Let it sit at least 30 minutes (the more you let the soda sit, the better) and then gently vacuum away.

#5 Involve your kids in the cleaning routine

Make your kids think of cleaning as a part of the family lifestyle and daily routine. Help them develop an organizing habit by setting a “cleanup time” on a regular basis. Maybe it’s not going to work perfectly at first, but with your help at the beginning, your kid will start to cooperate more.  Make cleaning a game for your toddlers. Give them a friendly competition like how many toys they can put in a box collector in a certain amount of time.

#7 Get Steamed

One of the most overlooked areas of house cleaning is how to clean floors, hardwoods etc.  Many people still rely on mops with a large bucket of water and detergent.  The problem is, while you may get a floor that looks clean, it is not necessarily disinfected.  Plus, the mop is heavy to wring out, and the water gets filthy quickly.  Steam cleaners are an effective, easy way to clean the floor while disinfecting 99.9% of all bacteria.  Plus, many models are very lightweight and don't use any caustic chemicals, making them very environmentally friendly.

#8 Clean With Vinegar

From microwaves to showerheads, vinegar is one of the most popular, eco-friendly and versatile cleaning staples around. Here are some unique, DIY cleaning techniques using vinegar:

  • Shower: Wipe your shower doors with distilled white vinegar to prevent soap scum and build up. For a clogged showerhead, pour some vinegar into a plastic bag and use a tie to secure it to your showerhead. Leave the bag overnight and remove before showering.
  • Kitchen and bathroom Drains: To help keep drains clog-free, pour a cup of white distilled vinegar down once every 2 weeks. Allow it to sit for half an hour then run cold water to flush it out.
  • Tile surfaces: You can scrub any countertop or use this solution to mop your floors. Mix 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar with half a gallon of warm water to clean all tile surfaces.
  • Mattress: It’s important to clean your mattress often to avoid dust mites, dead skin cells, etc. For stain removal especially, try spraying the mattress with vinegar and sprinkle baking soda over the top. You can place a towel over the area and let it sit for 1-2 hours. Then take your vacuum and go over the mattress for a final clean.
  • Disinfectant: Before cold or flu season hits, you can use a 50/50 vinegar-water mix to wipe down doorknobs, handles, switches, etc. around the home.
