Empty Seats by Wanda Adams Fischer (2/24)

It follows the journey of three baseball pitchers who’d been stars in their hometowns as they enter the competitive world of minor-league baseball.

They discover that everyone else on the team, affiliated with the now-defunct Montreal Expos, had also been stars, and that getting to Major League Baseball won’t be easy. Then life gets in the way.

The novel’s getting great reviews (from people I don’t even know!) on Amazon, and some of those say you don’t even have to like baseball to like this book. It’s compact, comes in three formats (audiobook soon to be available), and is cost-effective.
