Random Acts of Kindness Day: Its Importance and How to Help

Founded in 1995, the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is an internationally recognized nonprofit that’s headquartered in Denver, CO. Every year on February 17th, it’s Random Acts of Kindness Day—an occasion where you pay it forward without asking for anything in return. Learn more about this celebration and discover the different ways you can participate.

The Importance of Helping Others

Simply put, there will always be somebody out there who can use your help. Whether a person is experiencing emotional hardships or they’re physically unable to complete a task on their own, there’s a way for you to lend a helping hand. Not only do these acts of kindness help others, but it can also make you feel good in the process. Emory University claims that when you’re kind to somebody else, you receive the “helper’s high,” increasing the likeliness that you continue to do selfless acts in the future. Your kindness also inspires the rest of your community to act kind, too—it’s contagious!

Ways You Can Participate

Below we share a few of the ways you can celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day and give back to others.

Bring games and puzzles to your local children’s hospital

Do you have any board games or puzzles you no longer use? Consider donating them to your local hospital. Since some kids remain admitted for a long period of time, these board games will help the time fly by. Remember to donate games that children of all ages can play.

Donate non-perishable goods to a food pantry

Consider taking any non-perishable food items to your local food pantry. You’ll be surprised by just how many people you can help by donating your boxed and canned goods. If you can, call ahead of time; they can tell you which items they really need at the moment, helping you make the most of your donation.

Pay for the person behind you in the drive-thru

This gesture is sure to brighten anyone’s day. The next time you find yourself in the drive-thru, make it a point to put a few extra bucks toward somebody else’s order. Who knows, this pay-it-forward chain could go on throughout the day, all thanks to your initial generosity.

Compliment a friend or stranger

This one is simple, but it can go a long way. Whether you tell someone that you like their outfit or write a note to your friend describing your appreciation for them, a small gesture like this is certain to make anyone’s day.
